Questions on Happiness

What is real happiness?

Sirshree: Real happiness is not that happiness which you get when you achieve some thing. The mind has cast a shadow over the real you. When the mind falls -- then what is behind the mind -- that manifests. And when that happens it is real happiness. Suppose you have an aim, a desire to achieve something or to own something. And when you actually achieve it -- then the mind that was thriving only on that desire --falls for some moments because the desire has been quenched. And in those few moments of no-mind, you experience emptiness. This you call as happiness or bliss. All happiness you have ever experienced is only because of the mind getting empty, because of the no-mind state, because of the lifting of the shadow of the mind. But the false notion that you get is that because the target was completed -- you got happiness. Because of what you desired - you got happiness. Because of this false notion, desire for newer and more things increase. But, anything that gives you lots of happiness today does not give you the same amount of happiness later. After some time happiness diminishes. It ends. The real thing - the one that is shadowed by the mind -- after that is experienced -- then you get "bright" happiness (Tej Anand). This "bright" happiness never diminishes.

What then is "bright" happiness ?

Sirshree: That bliss that is beyond happiness and sorrow. For which there is no opposite. To site an example, the opposite of 'success' is 'failure'. Similarly: hot - cold, up - down, love - hate etc. - all words are related. But what is beyond both opposites is "bright". What is beyond love and hate is "bright" love. What is beyond happiness and grief is bright happiness. There is no opposite to "bright" happiness. Because that is 'one'. When you come to know of that "one" then, you are liberated from dualism.

Why is man unhappy?

Because of double unhappiness.

What is double unhappiness?

You are troubled by something. The body is under pain – this is first unhappiness. But on that unhappiness the mind becomes unhappy, why does this exist? Why me? Why not others? When would this pain go away? ---- Then the unhappiness of the body increases ten times over. The body was in pain. The body was curing it too. Nature on its own was curing the pain. But the thorn of the mind made it “my pain”, “my unhappiness”.

Does this mean we should not be unhappy?

This means unhappiness over unhappiness should not be there.

What does this mean?

This means that the comparing mind (contrast mind) that raises its head and defines the state of unhappiness shouldn’t be there.

I didn’t understand ...

Understand it like this. You got angry. It does not trouble you as such. Children get angry and the very next second, they are peacefully playing. But you are thinking as to “why did I anger?” Even after the incident has occurred, what is being thought over it for hour together --- that gives you trouble. So you get angry over anger and this troubles the mind. The more your understanding increases, you are rid of this double unhappiness.

That means unhappiness alone cannot trouble us?

Absolutely correct.

How is that?

When unhappiness is not acceptable, then double unhappiness begins i.e. unhappiness over unhappiness as to why I am unhappy? But when there is acceptance of this unhappiness, then unhappiness on that unhappiness doesn’t happen. Depression on depression doesn’t occur. And then this understanding will occur that it is only “non-acceptance” that is unhappiness and only acceptance is happiness.

Question of Realization

Question Answer Sessions with Sirshree Tejparkhi
On this page, you will find answers given out to truth seekers by Sirshree Tejparkhi. Some answers have been given to individual seekers who later wrote from their memory. Some are excerpts from his discourses where seekers asked questions and his answers thereto were documented.

Q : What is the most important aim of mans' spiritual search ?

A : Self Realization.

Q : But, can a householder , a man with responsibilities, ever attain self realization ?

A : Definitely. Married or not, male or female - it does not matter. One can surely attain this experience. Because this experience is already there with everyone all the time. It is inside. Here and now.

Q : However, because of all responsibilities a householder never gets time for listening, meditating, contemplating, devotion, etc

A : Yes. If actions are happening with attachment, then it increases your burdens, your obligations. Because of which you start feeling that "there is no time". But once you get the understanding - then there after man experiences solitude even while working. Then work becomes real devotion. Then being on oneself becomes real meditation.

Q : But all said and done, doesn’t man not reap the actions of his past lives?

A : Were you born now ? Are you today able to abandon all the concepts of your mind? Are you ready to raise yourself to a higher level than merely the concepts of heaven and hell? If you haven't done these now, then why do you bother about other births? Know the one who gets born. Identify the one who never is born. If you do FIRST THINGS FIRST then these entire questions would be answered. The fact is that you are ignorant about your true blissful state. In between, the clouds of "concepts" have overshadowed your true self. Unfold the knots and your true self will manifest.

Q : Is it necessary to become a monk, a recluse?

A : A householders thinks, "I am a householder." After becoming a monk - a new thought occurs to him - "I am a monk." By all this, you don't get freedom from thoughts. You don't get relieved of the mind. If you think by becoming a recluse you get relief from this mind only in the jungles - then why not at home? Instead, I ask you to become a "bright householder" . - The one who is beyond both householder and monk.

Q : Why is the mind always troubled?

A : " I do work " .This is the thought that generates all these troubles. First know how work happens. Remember who you are? Then work won't be a burden to you. Thoughts occur spontaneously and mind generates more thoughts on it. It shades these thoughts with its imagination and concepts. Due to which it somersaults in the past and the future. It goes away from the present. This is the exact trouble of the mind. The moment it knows the truth - it becomes silent. And then the bliss that is hidden behind the mind - bright happiness - it surfaces.

Q : Then how does all work happen ? What is this truth? - this true happiness?

A : Understand this with an analogy of a film screen. The movements of pictures on the screen do not effect the screen. The VIEWER always concentrates only on the pictures. Without the screen, the pictures do not exist. Yet it is the picture that gets all the attention. If the pictures are of fire- it does not burn the screen. Similarly, all the fire - the anger and the hatred inside man can not even touch that thing (true self) - It is man's duty to find out this - untouched spot and then try to get stabilized there. He will surely be successful.

Q : How to reach that spot?

A : Between you and that spot - there is this thin film of you mind. When the mind starts getting the understanding that is told in the "Final Truth" Sessions - Then that film disappears. Then, when, the mind falls, that place manifests. Where there is no happiness, no sorrow. Beyond both is "ultimate peace" - whose bright happiness man can experience and may want to share with others.

Q : But , there is also a director to the movie?

A : Movies happen on a non living screen. Hence a conscious entity is required to direct it. But the screen (spot) inside us - it is full of consciousness. There - no director is required.

Q : Then doesn't work happen according to our doings ? Does everything happening in our lives get directed from that place? So should we just wait with our hands tied?

A : The concepts of action and doership either trouble you or liberate you . The crow uses only one eye to see both sides. The elephant uses its trunk both as a hand as well as nose. Believe it or not, truth is one and the same. The door is one. To attain that place is man's final aim whether you believe it or not. The doer of action and non-action is one.

Q : What is "silence"?

A : The state beyond speech and thought is silence. Words originate from silence. And it is in this inner silence that thoughts disappear as well. In between every word, silence is available. In between every thought, silence is available. It is in the paper {background} of silence - those words are written. And attaining this silence is attaining yourself. Silence is the ultimate language.

Q : Is remaining in solitude necessary?

A : Solitude is inside a man himself. Even in a crowd while doing work, if man is able to always keep his mind at peace, then he is actually savoring {enjoying} solitude. If a recluse, staying in a jungle is trapped in a swamp of thoughts - then even in solitude he is not. Understanding takes you easily into solitude.

Q : The moment one sits to meditate, thoughts arise with great rapidity & then trouble you.

A : Yes. During meditation all kinds of thoughts arise. This is correct. The thoughts that are hidden [suppressed] in you- they have to come out one day or the other. If they don't arise - if they don't appear before the WITNESS - then how will they get eradicated? Thoughts are able to trouble you because you get attached to them. The witness who watches these thoughts are you, not the thoughts themselves. Knowing the witness who witnesses every experience in meditation - is Self Realization.

Q : How can I experience myself?

A : Experience of yourself is not a thing that is outside. That has to be again attained. It is already present. Because we think of ourselves as our body, we have forgotten our true nature.

Q : Would “knowing myself” help others?

A : Definitely ! Indeed - this is the biggest service. Seeing you, a desire would arise in the minds if others to attain this bliss due to which they too would become seekers. And finally, they would become disseminators of the Bright Understanding.

Q : How to see the omnipresent God?

A : For seeing God - it is necessary to know "What is not God" or attain the understanding level that "There is only God".

Q : How to find a Guru?

A : When a seeker’s desire to know the truth increases, when he becomes ready to listen the final truth - then the Guru automatically reaches the disciple. The Guru is the inner witnessor himself. It is through his grace that Self Realization is possible. Because you understand yourself to be the body - you make the mistake of thinking that the Guru is also another body.

Q : How to identify the Guru?

A : Is the Guru the one who can walk on water? Who can fly? Who can make things manifest out of thin air? - Not at all. Due to listening to whose words, due to whose presence you start to feel the bliss in life - that is the criterion - that is the way to identify the real Guru. The one who will make you realize yourself. The Guru will show you all the facets of your mind. The Guru will break your ego of being the doer. He would make you experience the truth of this world. Who would liberate you from all bondage. Who would liberate you from himself too.

Q: Who am I?

A: This is something that only you have to tell that who you are.

Q : I try a lot. Yet I cannot find out that "I". How is that "I"? Even after lots of effort I'm unable to find it. Nothing is clear.

A : You are trying to know it with the help of your imagination. Truth is beyond imagination. When the mind is unable to see a particular thing then it starts imagining about it. Who is that who says that the "I" cannot be seen? Instead of imagining, experience it with peace. Before grasping the "I am" feeling - "Understanding" has to be gained. Otherwise the mind will again and again raise its head and will weave a web of imagination. Reach the roots of it. Understanding that is imparted in the final truth sessions -- that can make you reach there. Due to which the mind falls or then it surrenders itself at the feet of God where everything is acceptable to it. This way, the mind will die. Surrendering yourself and understanding is one and the same. When the ego grasps the power of God - then it surrenders. By understanding, it goes into silence.

Q : How should this surrendering be?

A : Surrendering is successful only after the real meaning of surrendering is understood. This knowledge - comes only after getting Bright Truth and Bright knowledge. Surrendering is only then complete when it is doubtless. This is not something on which there could be a compromise. Whether our demands are met or not. In such a surrendering - everything is encompassed.

Q: But isn't it something to be laughed upon - that we keep finding this 'I'. "Who am I? Who am I?" - We keep thinking only of this.

A: You think of yourself as the body - that is why it seems humorous. But it is exactly the opposite. This thing is very serious. Because the moment you know yourself - all problems, all the depression, anger, worries, hatred vanishes. The fear of death and the war of life end.

Q : From time immemorial - the search for God has always been on. Has there been any final conclusion to all this?

A : Yes. God is silence manifest. It is only in silence that he can be known. Words can merely act as indicators. But when these words fall in the hands of sectarians, then they become the reason for differences. That is why people like Buddha never even mention God.

Q : What stands between me and God?

A : Your fickle mind and its wrong concepts and beliefs.

Q : I have lots of shortcomings. Will God remove them?

A: If your faith persists - all these shortcomings would be overcome.

Q: Why doesn't God Himself raise this faith in me?

A: For this you have to understand the truth or do surrendering.

Q : If I surrender myself before God - then don’t I need to do prayers?

A : Surrendering is the most supreme and powerful prayer of all.

Q : But how to keep faith on God's grace?

A : According to your mind, you do not feel God's grace. If you are not feeling His grace - it doesn't mean that God's grace is not happening. In your imagination - do not compare or judge God's grace. That you were born as a man - itself - is a big grace of God. Then in this body - if the desire for Truth arises - it is the second grace. Meeting a Guru who tells you the Truth - is the third grace. Faith arising on the Guru is the fourth instance of grace. Some of this grace has already been done. If you can't identify it - Why blame God?

Q : Please tell something in the end so that I can start contemplating.

A : In the night there is no sense of your body. When there is no body - the senses of the body don't work - due to which even this world disappears. You get up in the morning and say I slept well. In that deep sleep who was knowing who was awake? Who slept during the night? Who remained awake? Who got up in the morning? Who slept in the morning? Did it actually sleep in the morning or did the concepts of the mind cover it? How to know that 'never sleeping, ever awaking' witness? How to attain the sacred spot inside? How to attain it while in the awaking state? Then liberation from every sorrow, liberation from the aversions of the mind will happen. The mind, that was trying to understand all the things of the world - how to make it an object itself ? How should it bow down? Let the somersaults of the mind stop. Start living in the present. Be stabilized in your true self - these good wishes and blessings.

Tej Gyan Foundation: A Spiritual Organization with a Difference

By Chitra Jha

Do you know of any spiritual organization that is ISO 9001:2000 certified? Have you heard of any organization that promises ‘enlightenment’ for all, irrespective of age and gender; irrespective of educational, social, economic, and intellectual backgrounds? Have you ever attended a spiritual program that offers ‘System for Wisdom’ in a corporate training manner; and yet makes it simple enough for a common man to understand and experience it? You would wonder if such an organization exists. Well, such a wonderful organization with clarity of goal and the path for its achievement not only exists but thrives. Headquarted at the city of Pune, this wonderful organization has spread far and wide, covering not only a major part of India but also Americas, Europe, and Asia Pacific.

Founded by Tejguru Sirshree Tejparkhi, with a vision of creating a highly evolved society on Planet Earth, Tej Gyan Foundation has been a beacon of light for truth seekers. The word ‘tej’ signifies beyond duality. When the word ‘tej’ is pre-fixed to a word, it signifies the state beyond the two polarities. For example, there is happiness, and there is unhappiness; tej happiness (tejanand) is the bliss beyond happiness and unhappiness. ‘Tej’ is the source from which both the polarities of happiness and unhappiness emanate. Similarly, there is ignorance and there is knowledge; tej knowledge (tejgyan) is the wisdom which is beyond both ignorance and knowledge. Tej is the source from which both the extremes of knowledge and ignorance manifest.

Sirshree says that the word ‘tej’ is the missing link to understand the oneness of the existential experience which is beyond two. The existential experience is termed as Self, Witness, Allah, God, Ishwar, Lord, etc. The body functions because of that living (sentient) Consciousness, without that it is a dead entity, insentient. When life (the Consciousness), the living entity within us, experiences itself, it is known as Enlightenment.

The word ‘tejgyan’ refers to the highest knowledge and its experience. It is that state of wisdom from where nothing remains unknown; all the mysteries of life and the universe become crystal clear. This highest state of wisdom carries transformative power. It is a door to enlightenment. Each individual, family, and organization, in fact all of society is capable of experiencing and attaining ‘tejgyan’. The resultant abundance of joy, bliss, and love is something that cannot be explained in words, it can only be experienced. The name of the foundation ‘Tej Gyan’ originates from this ‘knowlerience’ (a new word coined by Sirshree to speak of both highest knowledge and its experience).

‘Tej Parakhi’ refers to the highest role one can assume in life. Sirshree’s disciples lovingly named him Tejparkhi- a living maestro, whose clarity and commitment is shared through the work of TGF.

Sirshree’s spiritual quest began about thirty years ago. Immersed in his quest for truth he practiced many meditations. His unquenchable thirst led him to various schools of thoughts and teachings. His desire to spend more and more time in the search of truth led him to relinquish his college teaching job. He undertook a long period of contemplation on the mystery of life until his search ended on enlightenment around August 1997. He arrived at the understanding that the missing link in all paths that lead to truth is the lack of ‘understanding’.

Sirshree says, “All paths that lead to truth begin differently- but end in the same way- with understanding. Understanding is the whole thing. And, this understanding is complete in itself. Listening to this understanding is enough.”

Sirshree started imparting this final understanding directly to seekers. As a college professor, his greatest skill was his ability to simplify the most complex of topics. Now he simplifies the most complicated topic in the world - spirituality and enlightenment - which he maintains are the simplest concepts.

TGF’s ‘System for Wisdom’ was created in 1998, to impart the wisdom of enlightenment practically and scientifically, in a step by step manner, to all seekers. The major objective of this system was to convert human beings into ‘Tej Sansaris’. A tej sansari is a wise person who knows that he is a gift of creation and consistently communicates joy, bliss, love, and enthusiasm in all his actions. He is aware of his true nature and has experienced it. A tej sansari is neither a recluse nor a worldly man. He gives his talents to the larger welfare of society and effortlessly pursues success, operating through tejgyan.

As Sirshree’s disciples (tej sansaris) grew in number, the need for a formal organization was felt. From the very beginning, Sirshree had attracted many professionals such as doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, and teachers due to his scientific and logical approach to explaining the final truth. Some of these professionals got together and created a trust called Tej Gyan Foundation in March 1999.

The foundation is registered as a non-profit organization under the Bombay Public Trust Act. The objectives of the foundation are

§ To impart understanding to everybody about the final truth (tejgyan) and expound scientific ways towards self realization.

§ To highlight the importance of tejgyan in all spheres of life- physical, psychological, social, financial, and spiritual.

§ To facilitate creation of a highly evolved society on Planet Earth.

The motto of Tej Gyan Foundation is “Happy Thoughts”. An integral part of Sirshree’s pivotal teachings, happy thoughts are thoughts beyond positive thoughts. These are thoughts of liberation and self realization. These are thoughts that motivate one to get rid of all other thoughts. Usage of the greeting ‘Happy Thoughts’ by TGFtians helps create a higher collective consciousness consisting of positive vibrations.

As an NGO, TGF focuses on education of humanity in the following areas:

· The personal quest (Who am I?)

· The organizational quest (Why am I here?)

· The family quest (What is love?)

Tejgyan is not a belief system or philosophy, but is the understanding which facilitates every individual’s natural growth through these quests.

Sirshree’s key teachings can be summarized in five simple points:

1. The question is not whether God exists. The question is do ‘you’ exist?

2. Everything is just a game of beliefs. Understanding is the whole thing.

3. The purpose of life on earth is to make the mind unshakable, pure, and loving.

4. There is a reason to be always happy (it is within you!). It is possible to be always happy.

5. Guru, God, Grace, and You: are one.

All these teachings are imparted in TGF through a systematic manner by listening to the final truth. According to Sirshree, it is possible to understand the truth by mere listening to it, as listening was the first path to truth. He says, “By listening, one understands. The moment one understands, actions automatically begin to happen. In fact, listening, understanding, and action occur at the same time. With understanding there is a change in action. With change in action, we are liberated from the bondage of karma.’

Sirshree likes to use simple stories, jokes, and anecdotes to impart the highest knowledge in a simple and effective manner. He laughs generously and whole heartedly during his discourses. This bright laughter is infectious to say the least. Thus knowledge of final truth is imparted in a light hearted environment where everyone feels at ease. And direct experience of God happens just by listening systematically……………….

Sirshree says that it is important to impart the highest knowledge in a step by step manner because at each level of understanding the answers differ. The System for Wisdom ensures that through various levels, seekers progress from lower answers to higher answers. The wisdom is imparted as per the level of consciousness of seekers. Seekers can join Group 1 and decide to move step by step as they want and if they want to. At each level their understanding is enhanced and their limiting beliefs drop off. As they attain higher understanding and get rid of their beliefs, they realize that world is their practice ground. They embrace this playground, rather than relinquish it……..

The System for Wisdom is a three step process:

§ Listening to the Truth breaks the false beliefs.

§ Contemplation of the Truth leads to understanding.

§ Application of the Truth leads to conviction.

In August 2008, Tej Gyan Foundation acquired the distinction of becoming one of the world’s first spiritual organizations to have a system for wisdom certified under ISO 9001:2000. This certification has enhanced the image of an already proven system in the eyes of the skeptics and faithful alike.

Last month, I was led to TGF’s MaNaN Ashram outside Pune, which is being developed as its headquarters over 25 acres of land amidst the glory of mountains and pristine beauty of nature, on a personal quest for the final truth. It was an incredible experience to say the least. There were over a thousand seekers; about half of them (including me) were staying in the Ashram itself. Eighty percent of the seekers were in their 20s or early 30s. The diversity was mind-boggling. From peasants to software engineers, from 70 year old women to hip teenagers; all listening to Sirshree under the same roof, connecting with each other and the Guru through a common thread: understanding the truth and experiencing it! The atmosphere was eclectic and magical. Besides experiencing joy and peace, I got to interact with many seekers, tejsevaks (volunteers), and satyacharyas (teachers of truth). Each story spoke volumes.

Khoyesh Thakkar has known Sirshree since 1988. He relates an interesting incident about those days. When he heard that Sirshree had attained enlightenment, he went to meet Sirshree expecting him to sport a beard and look like a sadhu. He was surprised to see Sirshree dressed up as before, even though he looked as if he was on a different plane. Khoyesh asked Sirshree, “Now that you are self-realized, what food do you eat?” In his inimitable style, Sirshree responded, “Are you enquiring about me or my body?” This answer had baffled Khoyesh at that time, but today he knows better. He is emphatic that only lucky people can understand the importance of a living Guru.

Dr. Sunita Sabnani is the editor of English books for TGF. She spoke about her pre and post TGF days with great candor. In her own words, “Since childhood I had felt that this world was hopeless and life was meaningless. After completing my medical studies, I went through a long period of depression, since I felt a vacuum inside me as well as a turmoil regarding what to do about my career and my life. That is when I came in contact with TGF and Sirshree. Gradually, Sirshree's simple but highest wisdom permeated my life, and I didn't even realize when I started believing that everything is going to be fine with this world and my life. I have started smiling and laughing again. I have understood who I actually am and what the meaning of life is. My life has become a celebration of self-expression, as I have settled down into doing what I love the most – writing. I am on the path of attaining higher consciousness and it has been a wonderful and enlightening journey with the most wonderful master, Sirshree. Now I am totally convinced that the Golden Era of Truth is beginning on Earth once again.”

Pramod works for an IT company. He is very convinced that a Guru is essential to achieve the highest level of consciousness. He says, “Ever since I came in touch with Sirshree, I have found answers to all my questions. My level of consciousness has grown. Now my life is filled with everything: money, fulfilling relations, knowledge, great experiences, and above all a broad outlook about life. Tejgyan has given me knowledge, not just of this world, but the world beyond death as well. I have overcome the fear of death, and have a crystal clear understanding about the mysteries of life.”

Girish Wadhwani works for an orphanage along with his wife. He has been associated with TGF for past 10 years. He cannot believe that at one point of time in life he was contemplating committing suicide. He says, “My relationship with my family members was at an all time low when I attended TGF’s family retreat. Today I love the very same people, I used to hate. I have understood answers to the questions like ‘Who am I?’, “What is the purpose of my life?” Not just my external world, but my inner world has also changed. I live in bliss: day in, day out.”

Corporate trainer Nitin Ahir speaks with an unusual calm, “My lid used to blow up at small things, such as traffic snarls, erratic mobile network, computer breakdown, garbage dumps across the city, potholed roads, power cuts etc. Life was full of countless stress moments. There was no stability, only struggle. It was like a run-a-ball situation with no wickets in hand. It was at such a time that Sirshree, the Zen master of our times, came to my rescue. He made me realize that stability cannot be found in an unstable world. Stability does not come when the world is stable; it comes when the mind is stable.”

People belonging to different faiths come to TGF and get a clear understanding about their own religion. Maulaso Nadaf, an Islamic teacher, said, “I was born in a Muslim family, yet it was in TGF that I understood what Kabir’s love and wisdom was all about. Now the essence of all faiths has percolated into my life.”

A fellow seeker, Police officer Sonkade Babusha, had a practical approach He said, “If eight hours are spent catching a thief, the entire ire is vent upon him once he is caught. But from now on I will choose the right response in the face of such provocations. I will respond while remaining in the present moment. This is the understanding I have received in TGF.”

The ‘shift’ was evident everywhere; in people’s thoughts, words, and actions. It seemed as though the seeds of a highly evolved society were being sown right there in the MaNaN ashram.

Tejguru Sirshree Tejparkhi and his Tej Gyan Foundation are working as a ‘lighthouse’, lighting one heart at a time. Soon the numbers will reach the critical mass, the so called tipping point. After that the momentum will gain weight. The movement will be unstoppable and along with the ‘shift of consciousness’, a new highly evolved society will become a reality on our beautiful planet. Such is the dream of a self-realized, fully conscious, and awakened soul…………………………………………..
